The Futa Jallon highlands stretch north of Mamou northwest towards Gaoual and northeast towards Dinguiraye and nearly reach Guinea's northern border with Senegal and Mali. Labé is near the center of the Futa Jallon and has been an important political capital since the conquest of the area by the Fulbe in the 1700's.
